Caught Doing Something Right - This is an interesting twist to a Safety Program. Catch your people doing the right thing for their own safety and the safety of those around them. Then, give them a reward right on the spot. This reward can be a ticket or a token that entitles the holder to receive a gift catalog, another award gift, or to save for higher value prizes. Or, they can be rewarded with a medium value award gift on the spot! This not only gives positive reinforcement right on time but it also allows for some management recognition of a good habit. Another plus is that it gets the supervisors into thinking safety.

Zero Lost Time - If your company goal is to reduce lost time accidents; sometimes a company wide award program is used to reward all if the goal is achieved. But, while this is a nice idea, all that it takes is one accident and your whole program is a failure.

Rather than an all or nothing approach, a program of awards with potentially diminishing value would be more effective. If you take into consideration what a year of no lost time accidents can save your company, the award should be considerable. Then, if an accident does occur, an award of lesser value would be earned. The award would continue to be reduced with each accident until an unacceptable level is reached where no award is given. With this system you will still have a program and maintain interest for the duration of the year.

Team Work - Much can be achieved with team work. A company will split the entire work force into teams. The object of this program is to not have any lost time accidents on your team. If the team has an accident-free period, each member receives a gift, a chance to win, or points. If there is a lost time accident with a team member, the entire team loses that period. The person who had the accident will lose an additional chance or gift. This type of program has proven to be very effective.

Quarterly Reward & Yearly Bonus Gift - For every three-month period that a particular goal is reached, a gift is given. At the end of the year, a bonus gift of higher value is given.

Monthly Awareness - This awareness program consists of the distribution of useful, inexpensive promotional products and gifts imprinted with the company's theme or logo. These products and gifts are either given to the employee on the job, or mailed home as a reminder to think Safety. Monthly Awareness is most effective when used with other programs, and can be implemented monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually. Results have shown that the more frequent the Monthly Awareness Program, the better the results.
